Pre-Op Appointment June 27, 2008

Filed under: WLS — Michelley @ 10:31 pm

Today I had my pre-op appointment at the hospital.  I was told it would take approximately 4 hours!  I was completely dreading having to sit in the hospital for 4 hours this afternoon, but thankfully it only took about and hour and a half!  I really didn’t know what to expect at the appointment.  When I got there I was given some paperwork to fill out and then taken to a classroom.  Three other women were there as well.  First a nutritionist came in and talked about what and when we would be eating in the hospital.  It was pretty much basic information that we’d already been told.  Nothing the day of surgery, ice chips the next day and then clear liquids the next day.  Next a woman from the surgeons office came in and had us complete a couple more forms and went over any questions we had.  She also weighed everyone and took our before pictures.  I was down 5.9 pounds since my first appointment with the surgeon.  After that the nurse came in and went over some things we should expect while in the hospital and tought us how to use the spirometer.  We were also given a surgical wash to use the morning before the surgery.

I found out today that my surgery got pushed to 3pm.  It was originally scheduled for 10:20; however my surgeon has a family member having surgery at the same time.  That is going to be a hard day.  On Sunday I am only allowed to have clear liquids: water, Jell-o, broth, sugar free popsicles and crystal light.  I am also supposed to take 3 tablespoons of milk of magnesia to “clean me out”.  That should be fun.  I am not allowed to have anything after midnight on Sunday…not even water.  So, come 3pm on Monday I am not going to be a happy camper!

It was nice to be around other people having the same surgery and kind of put me at ease.  But tonight I am starting to really get freaked out.   I have never had surgery, so I’m getting really scared!  I guess I just need to try and not think about it so much!

How do you like your zucchini? June 17, 2008

I’ve really become obsessed with my garden.  I think we are going to build a box and put it on the side of the house for my future gardens.  Well, I should say Matt will most likely be the one doing the building of the box.  I am looking forward to planting some pumpkins this summer as well.

I do have one problem though…my zucchini (like myself) do not conform to society’s standards in regards to size and shape.

Surgery June 10, 2008

Filed under: WLS — Michelley @ 1:57 pm

I haven’t really blogged about my surgery lately so I wanted to do an update. I finally got a call today with confirmation of my surgery date! June 30th. I am the second surgery scheduled for the day so my surgery will be sometime in the late morning. I am really excited, but VERY nervous at the same time. I keep wondering if I should go through with it and if it will be worth it. But I really feel that I will be happy in the end. I think I am more nervous about the surgery itself than I am of what life is going to be like AFTER the surgery. I’m sure it’s normal to have these nervous feelings and thoughts.

It’s been difficult to drink the protein shakes for the simple fact that I like food. The first kind I bought was EAS vanilla and it was horrible. But then Matt and I went into GNC and they actually let me try what they call their best tasting brand. It’s SEI Max Protein in chocolate. I can’t find a link online, sorry. It’s really not that bad. I’ve been making it with 1% or 2% milk to add a little flavor. I add 8oz of milk per scoop. I think after surgery I will have to make it with water to start, but it’s still not too bad. Here’s the nutritional breakdown for 1 scoop:

Calories 118
Total Fat 2g (Saturated 1g, Trans Fat 0g)
Cholesterol 24mg
Sodium 48mg
Total Carbs 3g
Sugar 1g
Protein 22g
Calcium 170mg
Potassium 95mg
